What to Expect

This 6-day journey takes you into the heart of Kham — the most culturally vibrant Tibetan region, spanning western Sichuan. The centerpiece is the legendary Dege Parkhang (Printing House) , a living cultural treasure that has preserved Tibetan Buddhist scriptures for nearly 300 years . Along the way, you will explore ancient monasteries, nomadic grasslands, sacred mountains, and experience authentic Tibetan village life. This tour is designed for travelers seeking deep cultural immersion and spiritual exploration.

Derge Printing House is a UNESCO-recognized treasure of Tibetan Buddhism.

Itinerary

Day 1Chengdu → Kangding (3,200m)

Drive through the Erlangshan Tunnel (scenic Sichuan-Tibet Highway).
Visit Luding Iron Chain Bridge (historic Qing Dynasty site).
Explore Kangding (gateway to Kham), stroll along Paoma Mountain.
Overnight: Kangding (acclimatization).

Day 2 Kangding → Tagong → Garzê (3,400m)

Morning: Tagong Grassland & Tagong Monastery (golden-roofed, sacred Avalokiteshvara statue).
Afternoon: Drive to Garzê, stop at Yala Snow Mountain viewpoint.
Overnight: Garzê (traditional Tibetan guesthouse).

Day 3 Garzê → Derge (3,300m)

Full-day drive through Chola Mountain Pass (4,900m, breathtaking views).
Visit Derge Parkhang (Printing House) – Witness ancient woodblock scripture printing (still hand-operated).
Explore Gonchen Monastery (Derge’s main Sakya sect monastery).
Overnight: Derge.

Day 4Derge → Manigango → Sershul (3,800m)

Morning: Visit Dzongsar Monastery (important Kagyu/Sakya center).
Drive via Manigango (colorful prayer flags & nomad camps).
Optional hike to Zhigpo Randroling Hermitage (meditation caves).
Overnight: Sershul (remote monastic town).

Day 5Sershul → Ganzi → Litang (4,014m)

Visit Sershul Monastery (1,000+ monks, dramatic mountain backdrop).
Drive to Litang, stopping at Haizi Mountain (glacial lakes).
Explore Litang Monastery (birthplace of the 7th Dalai Lama).
Overnight: Litang.

Day 6Litang → Chengdu

Sunrise at Litang Grassland (nomadic tents, yaks).
